TOPIC:

CHURCH and STATE SEPARATION – “Prayer in Public Spaces”

Public Issues Forum will host a discussion on “Separation of Church and State: Prayer in Public Spaces”. Members of a diverse group of panelists will make statements and respond to questions.

Speakers:

State Senator Brian Kelsey was selected to the Senate in 2009, after serving five years as a state Representative. He has served as Republican Floor Leader and Chairman of the Civil Practice Subcommittee. In the private sector, Senator Kelsey is a local attorney and small business owner, practicing law in the areas of probate, civil litigation defense, contracts, and business formation. Senator Kelsey also teaches constitutional law to undergraduate students at the University of Memphis. He was selected to the Memphis Business Journal “Top 40 Under 40” in 2004 and the Business Tennessee Magazine “30 Under 30” in 2005.

Rev. Walter B. Tennyson is Chaplain and Director of the Bonner Center for Faith and Service at Rhodes College and Parish Associate at Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Memphis. He previously served 13 years in the New York City area as pastor at Broadway Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, Chaplain at Columbia University, and associate pastor for Mission and Outreach at The Reformed Church of Bronxville, NY.

Dr. Bashir Shala is a widely recognized cardiologist who has been at the Memphis Heart Clinic since 2000. He is currently chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Memphis Islamic Center and Vice President of the Muslim Society of Memphis. He has an intense interest in promoting philanthropy and interfaith relations, speaking regularly to faith-based organizations around the Memphis area and in national conferences on Islamic history and theology. He is a contributor to the Commercial Appeal “Faith Matters” and has been featured on CBS, MSNBC, and NBC.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Public Issues Forum is a 20-year-old voluntary association, which sponsors programs to inform and educate the public on current issues and seeks to reinforce the principles set forth in the Constitution of the United States.
